Looking for the best gothic romance books? Belladonna is one you should add to your fall TBR!
Synopsis
In this story, we follow Signa whose parents passed when she was young. Growing up she’s lived with several relatives and one thing they all have in common is that they die after taking her in. Signa’s aware that Death follows her and one day she tries to poison herself to summon him. She begs him to leave her alone so Death promises that her next home will be better.
Signa starts living with her uncle and two children. They live in a mansion and have lavish lifestyles. From the surface, they seem like a nice, respectable family until Signa begins to see ghosts that haunt the mansion. There she learns a murderer is on the loose and her cousin is the next victim.
My thoughts
I was so engrossed in this book that I read it in 2 days! I liked the spooky atmosphere and the fall vibes it was giving. It is set in like the Bridgerton era where women are introduced to society and courted, and the writing reflects that time period as well. The murder mystery/ paranormal elements were cool too and there is a plot twist.
The romance was cute! It is closed door so I think this could be considered one of the best gothic romance books in YA. But overall I had a good time and am looking forward to reading the second book ☺️
Snippet
Just that morning she’d been sipping tea, living out her dream of participating in high society. She’d expected that gathering to fill the lonely void within her, yet all it had done was make her realize how much harder she had to work, and how much more she had to learn and mold herself to be acceptable.
Yet with Sylas, her shoulders finally eased and her body thrummed with life. With him, there was no worry of anyone scrutinizing her every move. She could just be.
